After reading the article, I was really shocked at the stories of how these women were practically force to get an abortion just because they were pregnant with a girl. The other thing is that from the two people interviewed in the article, it was their mother-in-law who pressured these women. One would imagine that the mother-in-law would sympathsize with her daughter-in-law. The mother, and her sons beat that women and lit her on fire just because she was pregnant with a girl? They traumatized this woman for the rest of her life, just because of something she could, or anyone for that matter can control; the sex of her baby. These women will be scarred physically and emotionally. This articles shows that some women in Indian culture are just used to get sons.
It is a shame women are less valued than men in some cultures. What will happen in the future when the ratio of women to men continues to freefall? Will arranged marriages be more common as it is a way for a family to ensure the continuation of their name in a country where women are hard to come by? Is carrying the name of a family so important it is worth torturing and killing other human beings over? It is going to be very hard for India to fix this problem in my opinion. These traditions are essentially engrained in their mind and will be so tough to change. In some ways too, its not just about traditions being hard to change, its the greed people have to get a dowry in exchange from their daughter-in-law family.
